The Bryce Huff saga looks to be coming to an end for the Eagles.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that they're trading Huff to the San Fransisco 49ers for third day draft pick. The trade won't be finalized until after June 1, but Schefter said both sides are "working to make it happen," and "Huff already reworked his contract to facilitate the trade." ESPN sources: 49ers and Eagles are working to finalize a trade that will send edge rusher Bryce Huff to San Francisco for a mid-round pick. ESPN's Field Yates obtained some of the financial details that made this trade possible:
The Eagles declined Bryce Huff's $15.58M fully guaranteed option bonus, which turned it into base salary.
Philadelphia then turned $9.05M of that base salary into a signing bonus, which allows San Francisco to take on the remaining money ($7.95M).
In sum, the Eagles save $7.95M in cash and create north of $15M in 2025 cap space.
San Francisco will inherit the final two years of Huff's deal, owing him $7.95M in cap and cash for this year.
It's a deal that makes sense for both parties. The Eagles save money and get rid of a non-productive player. Huff will get a fresh start, reuniting with Robert Saleh, his former head coach, who's the defensive coordinator for the 49ers.
Last offseason, the Eagles signed Huff to a 3-year, $51 million contract. The hope was he could replace the production of Haason Reddick, who was traded to the Jets after failing to agree to a contract extension. Instead, Huff wildly underperformed for the Eagles. He had just 2 1/2 sacks in 12 games with the Eagles. With the emergence of Nolan Smith on the edge and Josh Sweat providing consistent production, Huff's snaps were limited. Huff couldn't even get above 36-year old Brandon Graham on the depth chart either.
In November, Huff had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left wrist, which caused him to miss five games. Even when he returned, Huff continued to have a limited role. He played just one snap in the Wild Card Round against the Green Bay Packers, didn't get into the game against the Los Angeles Rams and saw 12 snaps in the NFC Championship game against the Washington Commanders. Huff was a healthy scratch for the Super Bowl.
It was clear Huff's value with the Eagles diminished within a year of them signing him. In 2023, he had 10 sacks with the Jets, but only played 42% of the snaps. Questions about his ability against the run arose when the Eagles signed him, but the pass rushing production made it seem like a solid signing.
That ended up backfiring. With Huff gone, the Eagles' depth at edge rusher is still solid. Smith broke out last season with 6 1/2 sacks, while Jalyx Hunt had flashes as a rookie. The Eagles might've lost Sweat to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency, but they also signed Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari to add depth.
