A Newtown Square man was charged with assaulting an employee at Penncrest High School after an incident Thursday.
Stephen Rex Matarazzo, 20, was charged with aggravated assault, harassment, ethnic intimidation, defiant trespass and fighting. Matarazzo is a former student at Penncrest High School, and according to Pennsylvania State Police, he was at the school to visit his girlfriend, a current student.
An assault on staff was reported to troopers at about 12:20 p.m. Thursday. During the school day, Matarazzo gained entry to the building in Middletown and located his girlfriend in the gymnasium area.
When a Penncrest staff member told Matarazzo he needed to leave, he allegedly pushed the staff member and continued to cause a disturbance until staff members escorted him out of the building.
Troopers took him into custody without incident and transported him to the Media station.
Matarazzo was arraigned by District Judge Diane M. Holefelder. Holefelder set Matarazzo's bail at 10 percent of $15,000; Matarazzo posted that bail Friday.
Matarazzo’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 18 in District Judge Walter Strohl’s courtroom.
DelcoNow is awaiting comment from the Pennsylvania State Police.
