A Haverford Township father in his 60s, still mourning the death of his wife just hours earlier, came face-to-face with a brazen suspect attempting to steal his pickup truck late Friday night.
According to Haverford Township police, the victim confronted the intruder around 2:30 a.m. on Kathmere Road. During the conflict, officers say, the thief slammed the grieving man to the ground and fled the scene, leaving him with a painful laceration to his arm.
Delaware County Police Chief John Viola emphasized the compounded trauma: the man endured the loss of his spouse only hours before being targeted in his driveway. Viola explained to Fox 29, “You know you’re going through a traumatic part of your life … then you have to put up with this on top of it."
This incident is part of a recent surge in attempted auto thefts in the region. Viola revealed to reporters that eight cars were stolen locally over two weeks, while neighboring Upper Darby reported 16 vehicle thefts in just three weeks.
Witnesses later spotted the suspect—a Black male in his early 20s, about 5'9"—on nearby Earlington Road. Police urge anyone with information to contact Det. Mark Johnson at (610) 853‑1298 ext. 1234 or [email protected]
Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant: lock vehicles securely and report any suspicious behavior immediately.
