Amateur scouting director Brian Barber and the Phillies selected LHP Cade Obermueller from the University of Iowa with their second-round pick, the 63rd overall selection in the 2025 MLB Draft.

Obermueller went 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA and 117 strikeouts across 15 starts for the Hawkeyes this past season.

Here's a snippet about Obermueller from Baseball America's scouting report on him:

"A small and skinny lefthander with a 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame and sidearm slot, Obermueller primarily works off a two-pitch fastball/slider combo. He sits in the low 90s and gets up to 95 with a fastball that has sinking shape and has traditionally been a heavy groundball offering for him—though his groundball rate fell significantly from 2023 to 2024—and pairs the fastball with a 78-82 mph sweeping slider.

"Obermueller’s below-average control might ultimately push him back to the bullpen in pro ball."

Earlier this evening, the Phillies selected Arkansas righty Gage Wood — a righty with electric fastball that could be fast tracked — with their first-round pick.

Under Barber, the Phillies have made some successful selections in the first round, landing Mick Abel (2020), Andrew Painter (2021), Justin Crawford (2022) and Aidan Miller (2023).

However, despite this being Barber's sixth draft, it's only the third time they've had a second-round pick. That's because they lost their second-round picks in 2020, 2022 and 2023 as penalties for signing free agents who rejected qualifying offers from their prior teams (Zack Wheeler, Nick Castellanos and Trea Turner).

Outfielder Ethan Wilson was taken in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft, and to this point has been a bust as he's currently playing in indy ball for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Meanwhile, the Phillies took outfielder Griffin Burkholder in the second round last year. He's hitting .208 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 32 games between the Florida Complex League and Single-A Clearwater this year.
