Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but Cristopher Sánchez is having the best season of his career. He is outperforming his 2024 pre All-Star Break performance by a wide margin.
Despite this, in all likelihood, he will not be a 2025 All-Star.
Sánchez ranks among the National League's top pitchers. His ERA of 2.59 ranks fourth, his 116 strikeouts rank ninth, and his .229 batting average against ranks 10th. He also has one start left prior to the break, which will come on Sunday against the Padres.
Before the All-Star Break in 2024, Sánchez posted a 2.96 ERA, 87 strikeouts and a .253 batting average against. He was named to the 2024 NL All-Star roster as a replacement for Chris Sale.
So Sánchez has improved by leaps and bounds since last year. His ERA is significantly lowered, his strikeouts have increased, and he has batters hitting less. He has also pitched 107 2/3 innings (again, with one start to go), as opposed to the 103 1/3 frames he posted before the break last year.
New York Mets' lefty David Peterson was named to the All-Star roster Thursday as a replacement for San Francisco Giants' southpaw Robbie Ray, who pitches on Sunday. The numbers speak for themselves:
I am genuinely trying hard to think of a good reason why David Peterson was chosen to be an All-Star over Cristopher Sánchez.
I’m trying REALLY really hard.
But I got nothing. pic.twitter.com/mv4n1JSumS
Looking at those numbers, it's hard to believe Sánchez was passed up for Peterson. With all that said... why isn't Sánchez an All-Star? Why hasn't he been named yet?
The logical reason is that Sánchez pitches Sunday, and the All-Star Game is Tuesday. Sánchez wouldn't be able to pitch on such short rest. Logistically, it makes no sense to replace Robbie Ray, who can't play because he's pitching on Sunday, with Cristopher Sánchez, who also can't play because he's pitching on Sunday.
Still, the optics are not good. Sánchez is having the best season of his career, and he won't receive recognition for it. Sánchez's agent, Gene Mato, sounded off about the snub:
Cristopher Sanchez @phillies, being left off the All-Star team is a travesty. The numbers, cannot be ignored, even if he is scheduled to start on Sunday. Something has to change @MLB
Taking his improvement into consideration, should Sánchez be a 2025 All-Star? Yes. Unfortunately, if the NL staff were going to pick him for the team, they likely would have done it by now. Multiple pitching replacements have been chosen, and Sánchez isn't one of them. His best shot to make the team and earn the recognition was to make the initial roster, and he didn't.
A travesty indeed.
