The Haverford Township School District was among many district’s nationwide affected when educational data contractor PowerSchool suffered a data breach.
In a communication to parents, the school district indicated that compromised data included names and addresses of students, and in some cases, Social Security numbers.
PowerSchool provides school software products to more than 16,000 customers, largely K-12 schools, that serve 50 million students in the United States.
According to a statement by the company, PowerSchool became aware of the hack Dec. 28, 2024. The statement indicated that data on students and staff had been accessed but that the situation was “contained” and that there was no evidence of malware or that the hackers have ongoing access to the system.
Schools weren’t widely notified until more than two weeks after the breach occurred. Names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers were among the information hackers obtained using a user's credentials to log into a customer service portal.
