Callers claim scam targets have warrants against them

  • Public Safety

Newtown Township Police are asking for the public’s help tracking down scammers posing as police and claiming to have warrants.

Police say the scammers contact targets via text, phone call or email, and claim the targets have criminal warrants against them and need to pay a fine to have the warrant cleared.

A statement from the Newtown police urges the public not to send cash, Bitcoin or any other form of payment.

Citizens should disconnect with the scammer, police said, then dial 911 and ask for an officer.
