General manager Howie Roseman said Tuesday at the NFL Combine that the Eagles plan to make a "concerted effort" to re-sign linebacker Zack Baun, according to Zach Berman of PHLY:
Howie Roseman said the Eagles will make a "concerted effort" to keep Zack Baun.
"We didn't do any deals during the season, which probably could have prevented some of these problems, but we just didn't feel like the timing was right," Roseman said.
The quote that Berman shared is interesting. It's almost like an acknowledgement from Roseman that maybe the Eagles should have tried to extend Baun early in the season, when it was becoming clear that they had discovered a diamond in the rough that was a perfect fit as a middle linebacker in Vic Fangio's scheme. Because they waited, the price will be higher, and it's no guarantee the Eagles will ultimately be the ones who sign the 28-year-old.
By now, you know the story of Baun, who was an unheralded edge rusher in four seasons with the New Orleans Saints before signing a one-year/$3.5 million deal to join the Eagles last offseason. The Eagles kicked him inside and he flourished, recording 151 combined tackles with 11 tackles for a loss and five forced fumbles. Baun was a First-Team All-Pro selection in his first year at inside linebacker, and capped off a magical season by picking off Patrick Mahomes deep in Kansas City Chiefs territory in the second quarter of Super Bowl LIX:
"Imma get one."

According to Over The Cap, the Eagles will have approximately $22.38 million in salary cap space to work with this offseason. Roseman will need to get creative with that, as Baun, Josh Sweat, Mekhi Becton and Milton Williams are among the the impending free agents from this past year's squad.
