A Darby woman faces theft and related charges after Upper Darby police say she stole thousands of dollars worth of lottery tickets from her job at Wawa.
According to a criminal complaint, Upper Darby police officers were called on Feb. 7 to the Wawa at 460 South 69 Street for a report of employee theft. Store management told police they had surveillance video of store associate Latisha Leanys Mychile Smith, 48, stealing tickets from the store’s Pennsylvania Lottery kiosk and putting them in her apron.
According to the complaint, Detective William H. Gottsch interviewed the Wawa senior asset protection advisor. The asset protection advisor said the store’s general manager contacted her on Thursday, Feb. 6, saying he observed on surveillance camera Smith stealing a pack of lottery tickets.
The asset protection advisor conducted a further investigation, according to the complaint, and concluded that Smith stole $16,500 worth of tickets from the kiosk between Jan. 14 and Feb. 2. Each theft was recorded by the store’s surveillance camera, according to the complaint.
Smith is charged with one felony count of theft and one felony count of receiving stolen property. She is free on unsecured bail. Scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 24
