Construction is under way on a $26.5 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project to replace the Route 291 (Governor Printz Boulevard) bridge over Conrail railroad in Tinicum Township, Delaware County, to maintain a safe and efficient crossing for the traveling public.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor will replace the existing 76-year-old, 469-foot-long, and 64-foot-wide bridge and allow for two lanes of traffic in each direction. In addition, 8-foot shoulders will be installed to accommodate Pennsylvania Bicycle Route E and an anticipated future multimodal trail connection.

Work also includes resurfacing on either side of the structure, guiderail and drainage improvements, pavement markings and signage installations, and traffic signal upgrades at the Bartram Avenue Intersection.

Motorists will encounter a 24/7 left lane closure in both directions on Route 291 (Governor Printz Boulevard) between Bartram Avenue/Scott Way and Stevens Drive for bridge work.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Once initial bridge repairs are complete, traffic will shift. During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions for the approximately 21,520 motorists who travel the structure daily. Bicyclists will be directed to use a posted detour to remain safe and avoid the work zone.
