Upper Darby police charged an Upper Darby man with resisting arrest, multiple counts of aggravated assault and other offenses after police a call for unauthorized use of a car escalated.

According to an affidavit filed by Upper Darby Police Officer Julia Ehnot, Ehnot and Officer Hayley O’Connor responded to a call in the 7700 block of a Parkview Road from a resident who claimed her grandson had taken her car and her credit card without permission.

Police said that when they arrived, they saw the grandson, Justin Sarsfield, 26, walk toward the rear of the home and climb on top of a trash bin. Police said they saw Sarsfield holding a pipe of the kind used to smoke crack cocaine.

Police attempted to take the pipe from Sarsfield, which he resisted. Police then attempted to arrest Sarsfield and a struggle ensued. The two officers continued to attempt to subdue Sarfield while also calling for backup.

Other officers arrived and police were able to take Sarsfield into custody. A search of Sarsfield’s person revealed the victim’s credit card as well as a substance later confirmed to be contain.

Sarsfield is charged with four counts of felony aggravated assault, one count of misdemeanor resisting arrest, two felony counts of theft of moveable property, one misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance and summary charge of disorderly conduct.

Sarsfield is being held at the Delaware County jail after failing to pay $20,000 bond. He is set for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 26.
