The Phillies have consistently said that they expect No. 1 prospect Andrew Painter to join them at some point this summer, but that could mean his Major League Debut comes at any point between June and August.
So what is Painter doing in the meantime?
Rob Thomson said before this evening's game against the Colorado Rockies that Painter's bullpen session Tuesday in Clearwater was "very good." His next step will be to do a live batting practice session where he'll have one up-down, meaning he'll effectively pitch two innings.
So what will Painter's next step be after Friday?
"Not sure, but Friday will determine a lot of things," Thomson said.

Meanwhile, Ranger Suárez continues to progress as he works his way back from low back stiffness.
"He had a bullpen yesterday," Thomson said of Suárez, who is also still in Clearwater. "Velocity was good, [he] came out of it fine. We'll check in the next couple of days. He may throw a BP on Friday."
Thomson said it's possible depending on how Suárez feels that his throwing session on Friday could also be live against hitters. The expectation is that before Suárez returns to the Phillies starting rotation, he'll require some sort of rehab stint.
As the Phillies await for the arrival of Suárez and/or Painter, Taijuan Walker will open the season in the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Walker will make his first start of the season Thursday afternoon against the Rockies, looking to rebound after a nightmarish 2024.
