Precautions implemented in wake of hot, dry summer

  • Delaware County

As the region endures one of the driest, hottest years on record, area jurisdictions have issued bans on burning of leaves and other detritus, as well as recreational fires.

In Upper Darby, the ban has been in effect since Nov. 6 and will continue until further notice. No open burning of any kind, including recreational fire pits, bonfires, brush burning, and agricultural burning will be permitted.  No burning of yard waste or debris (including leaves, branches, or grass) is allowed. Charcoal or wood-burning grills may still be used, but only with caution and under supervision. Propane and gas grills are permitted.

“We are prioritizing the safety of our community during this time of increased fire danger,” said Fire Chief Brian Boyce, who is also the Upper Darby Emergency Management Coordinator. “This burn ban is a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of fire-related emergencies. We appreciate the cooperation of residents and businesses in adhering to these restrictions for the safety of everyone in Upper Darby.”

Residents who witness violations of the ban are asked to call 911.

In Marple Township, a burn ban  has been in effect since Nov. 3 and will continue until Dec. 3. This burn ban applies to all outdoor fires, including fireworks, recreational fire pits, chimineas, and any wood-burning appliances.

For questions, contact the Marple Township Municipal Administration Office at 610-356-4040.

In Springfield, a ban on all open fires, including recreational fires, has been in effect since Oct. 30 and will remain until further notice.
