Jason Kelce Apologizes Following Phone-Smashing Incident

  • Eagles

Eagles legend Jason Kelce opened up Monday Night Countdown with an apology for actions that took place over the weekend in Penn State.

"You know listen, I think everybody's seen on social media everything that took place this week. Listen, I'm not happy with anything that took place. I'm not proud of it. And in a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate. And I just don't think that's a productive thing ... I really don't. I don't think that it leads to discourse and it's the right way to go about things. And in that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn't have. So, I think the bottom line is, I try to live my life by the golden rule. That's what I've always been taught. I try to treat people with common decency and respect, and I'm gonna keep doing that moving forward even though I fell short this week."

After a fan following and recording Jason used a homophobic slur to describe Travis Kelce — referencing his relationship with Taylor Swift — Kelce grabbed the fan's phone and smashed it. He also used the homophobic slur back at him.

In general, the response was overwhelmingly in Kelce's favor, though most agreed he should not have repeated the slur back at the heckler. That, unfortunately, was a word that people used as a dis until recent years. Thankfully, the world has largely evolved, and the word is no longer used in polite society.

It's unclear if Kelce's apology was aimed primarily at the incident as a whole, or his use of the word back at the heckler. We also don't know what happened behind the scenes at ESPN that led to this apology, although it seemed pretty genuine from Kelce.
