Upper Darby Township has reached an agreement on a three-year contract with its municipal workers, the township said in a published statement.
The 115 members of Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) Local 234 had voted earlier this week to authorize a strike upon the expiration of the existing contract at end of day Dec. 31.

Under the terms of the new agreement, TWU workers will receive a wage increase and other benefits. Union members will pay more for health insurance. The township had previously argued that employees’ five percent contribution under the existing contract is unsustainable and well below the national average.
The new contract will run through 2027, pending authorization by union membership and township council.
